(April 2021) Sadly, Living Legend Lee Bernard also died on April 19, 2021 at the age of 98. A lifelong resident of Erath, Louisiana, Lee served as a French translator for U.S. forces during WWII and was the subject of the historical LPBS documentary, "Mon Cher Camarade." It was at Lee’s Canal Service Station in Erath that the legendary D.L. Menard wrote his classic song “The Back Door” while pumping gas for customers. All these years, Lee was a prime example of a dedicated and loyal citizen, supporting the Civil Defense organization and the local sports teams. You can read more about his life on our website.
(April 2021) Willis Granger (R), the father of Acadian Museum benefactor Weldon Granger, died of natural causes at his Erath home on April 12, 2021. During WWII, Willis served on the USS Cacoctin, a US Navy flagship that was instrumental in planning the European invasions. He and his wife Edith (L) were parents of 11 children. He worked as a sharecropper before settling into a lifelong career with the Diamond Crystal Salt Company.

(June 2023) O. J. and Leona Manuel are shown on their wedding day, June 5, 1943 in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
On Saturday, June 3, 2023, 40 members of the Manuel family celebrated a family reunion at the Erath Community Center. The occasion was the 80th anniversary of the wedding of O. J. and Leona M. Manuel which was on June 5, 1943. At the gathering were the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the spouses of the family.
At the center of the celebration of the lunch were Leona’s famous rice dressing and corn macque choux; everyone enjoyed fried chicken, all of the accompaniments and a wide range of desserts. A family genealogy chart tracing nine generations of the Manuel family anchored a display of six tables with pictures, letters, and memorabilia from the Manuel farm and two homesteads on Gin Street.
