Christy Dugas Maraist was born on December 25, 1942 in St. Martinville, Louisiana. She is the daughter of Clet Dugas and Rita LeBlanc. In 1965, she married Dr. David Maraist at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church.
Her education includes graduating from St. Martinville High School and the University of Southwestern Louisiana with degrees in English and math education.
Her civic activities include, Acadian Memorial Foundation Board (from its inception in 1994 to the present and President from 2000 to 2006), past membership in Avec Souci, the Lafayette Parish medical Auxiliary (past resident), sponsorship of Doctor’s Office at Acadian Village and a past CODOFIL board member.
Some of the completed projects while she was president of the Acadian Memorial Foundation Board include: the deportation cross and mosaic family crests in garden; voices on mural; first Acadian Memorial Festival in 2005. The 2006 project – Let the Children Speak – was awarded The History Channel’s “Best project” (brought children who wrote the stories of their ancestors to Washington, D. C.); Save Our History Grant: bi-lingual audio interactive presentation; established L’Ordre du Bon Temps; and established the Acadian Memorial Endowment Fund Community Foundation.
